There are rare Moldavites, and then there are Besednice Ježkovna (Hedgehog) specimens. Revered by collectors worldwide for their extraordinary sculpturing, exceptional clarity and extreme rarity, they represent the pinnacle of what nature produced during the formation of Moldavite over 14 million years ago.

Weighing a substantial 9.26 grams, this magnificent specimen belongs to an elite class of Besednice Hedgehogs seldom encountered on the open market. Its deeply carved, spiny surface is beautifully preserved from every angle, while the outstanding clarity and balanced form make it a truly world-class example. Hedgehogs approaching this size in such immaculate condition are exceptionally scarce and are increasingly regarded as investment-grade specimens.

The Besednice deposits, famed for producing these extraordinary Moldavites, were completely exhausted and permanently closed in 2010. Every genuine Ježkovna available today therefore comes from older collections, with the finest examples becoming progressively more difficult to acquire as they disappear into long-term private collections.

This exceptional specimen was painstakingly excavated by hand by a veteran Czech Moldavite digger many decades ago before being carefully preserved within a private collection. It remains in immaculate condition, displaying the sharp, deeply etched sculpturing and pristine integrity that define the very finest Besednice Hedgehogs.

How many flawless Besednice Hedgehogs exceeding nine grams still exist? No one can answer with certainty, but the number is undoubtedly extremely small. Opportunities to acquire specimens of this size, preservation and provenance are exceptionally rare, making this an outstanding acquisition for the serious collector and a remarkable example of one of Earth's most extraordinary natural glasses.

What is Moldavite & where is it from?

Moldavite is a rare tektite or meteoric glass, caused by an asteroid impact 15 million years ago. The intense, 10,000°C+ temperatures of the strike vapourised the asteroid, target rock and sand, flinging the molten substance high into the atmosphere.

From the impact zone in Germany some 300km away, it landed back to earth in what is now the Czech Republic and as it flew, it cooled and solidified into translucent green, glass-like droplets of various shapes and sizes.

It is said that only 1% of what had originally fallen is still intact to this day and the estimates of the total amount of Moldavite remaining is under 300 tonnes. In comparison with gold or diamonds, this makes Moldavite 1000x rarer.

99% of all Moldavite is found in a small area in the southern part of the Czech Republic. It can be found on the surface but the highly prized, well-preserved specimens are found up to 6 metres underground.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What is Moldavite, and where does it come from?

Moldavite is a rare, green tektite formed from a meteorite impact that occurred around 15 million years ago in what is now the Czech Republic. This extraordinary stone is found only in a small region around the Moldau River in Bohemia, making it one of the rarest gemstones on Earth.

Authentic Moldavite has a distinctive surface texture, natural pits, and a translucent green color that varies in intensity. It is also lighter than glass imitations. To ensure authenticity, purchase Moldavite from reputable sources, and consider requesting a certificate of authenticity.

Moldavite is believed to be a powerful stone for transformation, personal growth, and spiritual connection. It is often used in meditation, energy healing, and other spiritual practices to enhance intuition, amplify energy, and facilitate communication with higher realms.

To care for your Moldavite jewelry, gently clean it with a soft cloth and mild soap. Avoid exposing it to harsh chemicals, extreme temperatures, or prolonged sunlight, as these can affect its color and structure. Store Moldavite separately to prevent scratches.

Moldavite is expensive due to its rarity and limited supply, as it is found only in a specific region of the Czech Republic. Additionally, its unique origins and increasing popularity as both a gemstone and a spiritual tool contribute to its high value. Prices can vary significantly depending on the size, quality, and uniqueness of the piece.
