One of this specimen's most remarkable attributes is its Angel Chime. When gently suspended and lightly struck against another Moldavite, it produces an exceptionally high-pitched, bell-like tone—a phenomenon highly prized by experienced collectors. While Angel Chime Moldavites are typically associated with thin, delicate specimens where the reduced mass allows them to resonate more freely, this example defies expectations. It is a substantial, thick and heavily built specimen, yet still produces a beautifully clear, high-frequency chime. In over two decades of handling many thousands of Moldavites, examples displaying this combination of size, thickness and resonance have proven to be exceptionally scarce. The phenomenon itself remains something of a mystery. Although no definitive scientific explanation exists, it is widely believed that an Angel Chime results from an exceptionally rare combination of a Moldavite's internal structure, density, thickness, shape and natural elasticity, allowing it to resonate much like a finely tuned bell. Change any one of these variables and the chime is often lost entirely. The fact that such a thick, robust specimen possesses this remarkable acoustic quality only adds to its rarity and fascination, making it a feature that few collectors will ever have the opportunity to experience firsthand.

The surface sculpture is nothing short of extraordinary. What is Moldavite & where is it from?

Moldavite is a rare tektite or meteoric glass, caused by an asteroid impact 15 million years ago. The intense, 10,000°C+ temperatures of the strike vapourised the asteroid, target rock and sand, flinging the molten substance high into the atmosphere.

From the impact zone in Germany some 300km away, it landed back to earth in what is now the Czech Republic and as it flew, it cooled and solidified into translucent green, glass-like droplets of various shapes and sizes.

It is said that only 1% of what had originally fallen is still intact to this day and the estimates of the total amount of Moldavite remaining is under 300 tonnes. In comparison with gold or diamonds, this makes Moldavite 1000x rarer.

99% of all Moldavite is found in a small area in the southern part of the Czech Republic. It can be found on the surface but the highly prized, well-preserved specimens are found up to 6 metres underground.
