Angel Chime Moldavites are given their name because of the distinctive clear, bell-like or glassy ringing sound they can produce when gently tapped or carefully allowed to touch another piece. This characteristic chime is associated with Moldavite specimens that have the right combination of natural shape, thinness, structure and resonance. Not every Moldavite will produce this distinctive sound, making good Angel Chime specimens especially interesting to collectors.

Formed approximately 15 million years ago following the impact that created the Ries crater in southern Germany, Moldavite is a natural tektite found primarily in the Czech Republic. Material ejected during the impact travelled hundreds of kilometres before falling across what is now southern Bohemia and Moravia, where millions of years of geological processes created the remarkable shapes and surface sculpturing seen in genuine Moldavite today.
