An exceptional collector’s lot comprising five genuine Besednice Ježkovna Moldavites, more commonly known amongst collectors as True Besednice Hedgehogs.

Originating from the legendary Ježkovna deposit at Besednice in Southern Bohemia, these remarkable Moldavites are regarded as amongst the most desirable and instantly recognisable specimens ever produced by any Czech locality. The Ježkovna deposit became famous for its extraordinarily deep sculpturing, with sharp ridges, grooves, spikes and deeply etched valleys creating the unmistakable “hedgehog” texture for which these stones are named.

Each of the five specimens in this lot is a splendid miniature example of the classic Ježkovna form, displaying beautifully developed natural sculpturing despite its relatively small size. Together they form an extremely attractive and cohesive little collection, with each stone possessing its own individual shape, character and pattern of etching.

Most importantly, all five specimens are in mint condition and completely undamaged. This is particularly significant with True Hedgehogs, as their pronounced ridges and delicate projections make them inherently vulnerable to chipping and breakage. Finding well-preserved examples is increasingly difficult, and assembling five intact specimens together makes this an especially appealing collector’s lot.

The famous Besednice deposits are no longer producing these classic specimens, meaning the True Hedgehogs appearing on the market today are increasingly sourced from older collections. As exceptional pieces continue to disappear into private collections, fine, undamaged Ježkovna specimens have become increasingly sought after.

What is Moldavite & where is it from?

Moldavite is a rare tektite or meteoric glass, caused by an asteroid impact 15 million years ago. The intense, 10,000°C+ temperatures of the strike vapourised the asteroid, target rock and sand, flinging the molten substance high into the atmosphere.

From the impact zone in Germany some 300km away, it landed back to earth in what is now the Czech Republic and as it flew, it cooled and solidified into translucent green, glass-like droplets of various shapes and sizes.

It is said that only 1% of what had originally fallen is still intact to this day and the estimates of the total amount of Moldavite remaining is under 300 tonnes. In comparison with gold or diamonds, this makes Moldavite 1000x rarer.

99% of all Moldavite is found in a small area in the southern part of the Czech Republic. It can be found on the surface but the highly prized, well-preserved specimens are found up to 6 metres underground.
