An outstanding 1.75 gram Moldavite from the legendary Besednice Ježkovna locality, displaying the dramatic natural sculpturing associated with a true “hedgehog.” Broad and compact in form, this specimen features strong radial patterning, deep relief, rugged edges and excellent translucency.

Adding considerably to its character and rarity, this specimen is both an Angel Chime Moldavite and a natural hagstone.

When gently tapped, the Moldavite produces the distinctive clear, bell-like ringing tone associated with Angel Chimes, caused by natural internal stresses within the tektite. It is estimated that fewer than 1% of Moldavites possess this unusual acoustic quality, making genuine Angel Chimes particularly sought after by collectors.

Even more remarkably, the stone has a small natural hole passing completely through it, making it a true hagstone. The opening is entirely natural, created through weathering and erosion rather than drilling or human alteration.

Hagstones have a long history in European folklore and folk tradition. Naturally holed stones were carried or hung as protective talismans and were traditionally associated with good fortune, protection from harmful influences and the ability to see beyond ordinary perception. In some traditions, looking through the natural hole was even believed to allow a person to glimpse hidden or unseen realms.

The principal face displays striking ridges spreading outward across the stone, forming sweeping channels and finer branching textures. Around the perimeter, raised crests, scalloped edges and sharp natural projections create the unmistakable hedgehog silhouette for which Besednice Ježkovna Moldavites are famous.

The reverse offers broader, deeply weathered textures, giving the specimen a distinctly different appearance from either side. Held to the light, the translucent green glass illuminates beautifully, with the thinner edges becoming particularly luminous and revealing the varying thickness of the natural glass.

What is Moldavite & where is it from?

Moldavite is a rare tektite or meteoric glass, caused by an asteroid impact 15 million years ago. The intense, 10,000°C+ temperatures of the strike vapourised the asteroid, target rock and sand, flinging the molten substance high into the atmosphere.

From the impact zone in Germany some 300km away, it landed back to earth in what is now the Czech Republic and as it flew, it cooled and solidified into translucent green, glass-like droplets of various shapes and sizes.

It is said that only 1% of what had originally fallen is still intact to this day and the estimates of the total amount of Moldavite remaining is under 300 tonnes. In comparison with gold or diamonds, this makes Moldavite 1000x rarer.

99% of all Moldavite is found in a small area in the southern part of the Czech Republic. It can be found on the surface but the highly prized, well-preserved specimens are found up to 6 metres underground.
