An exquisite 5.07 gram Moldavite from the celebrated Besednice Ježkovna locality, exhibiting the dramatic sculpturing and unmistakable character of a true “hedgehog.” With a length of over 5 centimetres, this substantial specimen has an elongated, sweeping form that gives it exceptional presence in the hand.

Adding to its rarity, this is a genuine Angel Chime Moldavite. When gently tapped against another hard surface, it produces a clear, bell-like ringing tone created by natural internal stresses within the tektite. It is estimated that fewer than 1% of all Moldavites possess this remarkable acoustic property, placing Angel Chimes amongst the rarest and most desirable specimens available.

The surface is dominated by powerful longitudinal ridges and deep flowing channels running through the stone from end to end. These broad, overlapping structures resemble weathered bark or flames, producing a strong sense of movement across the glass. Smaller etched details, pits and secondary grooves add further complexity between the principal ridges.

Around the perimeter, numerous pointed projections and irregular serrations create the distinctive spiny silhouette associated with Besednice hedgehogs. The specimen is noticeably three-dimensional, with elevated folds and sculptural peaks that change significantly when viewed from different angles.

Its green glass ranges from lighter translucent margins to deeper, smoky green areas within the thicker central sections. Under strong illumination, light travels through the raised fins and thinner edges, revealing subtle changes in colour and emphasising the depth of the natural relief. The darker grooves provide a striking contrast against the brighter, luminous ridges.

The reverse carries equally interesting detail, combining smoother flowing planes with rugged folds, deep recesses and sharply raised sections. Small natural pits and bubbles visible within the glass further contribute to its organic character and provide close-up points of interest.

For complete transparency, the specimen has a minor chip along one edge, visible in the photographs. It is small relative to the overall size of the piece and does not significantly detract from its dramatic form, extensive sculpturing or display appeal. The remainder of the specimen retains a wealth of well-defined natural peaks and delicate surface detail.

At 5.07 grams, this is a commanding and highly characterful Ježkovna Moldavite. Its generous size, elongated double-fan profile, deeply carved flowing ridges and bold hedgehog perimeter make it a particularly striking example of natural Moldavite sculpture.

What is Moldavite & where is it from?

Moldavite is a rare tektite or meteoric glass, caused by an asteroid impact 15 million years ago. The intense, 10,000°C+ temperatures of the strike vapourised the asteroid, target rock and sand, flinging the molten substance high into the atmosphere.

From the impact zone in Germany some 300km away, it landed back to earth in what is now the Czech Republic and as it flew, it cooled and solidified into translucent green, glass-like droplets of various shapes and sizes.

It is said that only 1% of what had originally fallen is still intact to this day and the estimates of the total amount of Moldavite remaining is under 300 tonnes. In comparison with gold or diamonds, this makes Moldavite 1000x rarer.

99% of all Moldavite is found in a small area in the southern part of the Czech Republic. It can be found on the surface but the highly prized, well-preserved specimens are found up to 6 metres underground.
