Gold-Filled Wire Explained

14k gold-filled wire should not be confused with ordinary gold plating. Gold-filled material consists of a substantial layer of genuine 14k gold permanently bonded to a jeweller's brass core using heat and pressure. By weight, gold-filled material contains approximately 5% genuine gold (1/20) and around 100 times more gold than typical gold plating.

Because the outer surface is genuine 14k gold and considerably thicker than plating, it provides the rich colour, lustre and feel associated with solid gold and, with normal care, will not simply flake or wear away as conventional gold plating can.

Gold-filled wire is also particularly well suited to intricate wire wrapping, where solid 14k gold can be prohibitively expensive and difficult to work into elaborate designs. The result is a premium material combining the appearance and durability of genuine gold with the flexibility required for fine, detailed wirework.
