An outstanding 1.75 gram Moldavite from the legendary Besednice Ježkovna locality, displaying the dramatic natural sculpturing associated with a true “hedgehog.” Broad and compact in form, this specimen combines a beautiful irregular outline with strong radial patterning, deep relief and a wonderfully rugged perimeter.

Adding to its rarity, this is a genuine Angel Chime Moldavite. When gently tapped against another hard surface, it produces a clear, bell-like ringing tone created by natural internal stresses within the tektite. It is estimated that fewer than 1% of all Moldavites possess this remarkable acoustic property, placing Angel Chimes amongst the rarest and most desirable specimens available.

The stone’s principal face is dominated by a striking network of ridges that spread outward from the central area. Some form broad, sweeping channels, while others divide into finer branching textures, creating an appearance reminiscent of feathers, leaves or crystallized frost. The surface alternates between strongly etched sections and smoother translucent areas, lending the specimen considerable visual depth.

Around its perimeter, an uneven succession of raised crests, scalloped edges and sharp natural projections forms a bold, crown-like silhouette. Several taller peaks rise prominently above the body, while smaller lobes and indentations continue around the remaining edges. This dense arrangement of sculptural features gives the specimen a substantial presence despite its modest weight.

The reverse presents a contrasting character, with broader, more irregular relief and clusters of rounded, deeply weathered forms. These organic textures differ noticeably from the pronounced radial ridging of the opposite face, making the stone fascinating to examine from either side. Viewed in profile, its thin glass body rises into a series of distinct crests and folded edges.

Held to the light, the pale olive-green glass displays excellent translucency. The thinner margins brighten to a luminous yellow-green, while the central ridges and deeper sculptured areas retain richer olive tones. Light passing through the varying thicknesses emphasizes the specimen’s layered surface and reveals subtle flow-like structures within the natural glass.

What is Moldavite & where is it from?

Moldavite is a rare tektite or meteoric glass, caused by an asteroid impact 15 million years ago. The intense, 10,000°C+ temperatures of the strike vapourised the asteroid, target rock and sand, flinging the molten substance high into the atmosphere.

From the impact zone in Germany some 300km away, it landed back to earth in what is now the Czech Republic and as it flew, it cooled and solidified into translucent green, glass-like droplets of various shapes and sizes.

It is said that only 1% of what had originally fallen is still intact to this day and the estimates of the total amount of Moldavite remaining is under 300 tonnes. In comparison with gold or diamonds, this makes Moldavite 1000x rarer.

99% of all Moldavite is found in a small area in the southern part of the Czech Republic. It can be found on the surface but the highly prized, well-preserved specimens are found up to 6 metres underground.
