An outstanding 2.96 gram Moldavite from the legendary Besednice Ježkovna locality, displaying the distinctive, deeply sculptured surface that defines a true “hedgehog.” 

Adding to its rarity, this is a genuine Angel Chime Moldavite. When gently tapped against another hard surface, it produces a clear, bell-like ringing tone created by natural internal stresses within the tektite. It is estimated that fewer than 1% of all Moldavites possess this remarkable acoustic property, placing Angel Chimes amongst the rarest and most desirable specimens available.

Its surface is covered with beautifully preserved radiating ridges, flowing grooves and sharp natural projections. These textures sweep outward across the glass in overlapping, feather-like patterns, giving the specimen remarkable movement and dimensionality. An irregular natural opening near the centre adds further character to its intricate silhouette.

Viewed from the side, the Moldavite reveals an impressively slender profile punctuated by raised crests and jagged sculptural edges. Its asymmetrical form is especially compelling: one end opens into a broad, deeply ribbed fan, while the other rises into a narrower series of rugged peaks and folded textures. Each face presents a distinctly different arrangement of ridges, valleys and translucent edges.

Held to the light, the pale olive-green glass displays excellent translucency. The thinnest areas glow brilliantly, revealing subtle variations in colour and internal flow, while the deeper ridges produce striking contrasts of light and shadow. The combination of its delicate construction and strongly etched surface gives the piece an almost organic appearance, reminiscent of wings, leaves or flowing feathers.

True Besednice Ježkovna Moldavites are increasingly difficult to obtain, with thin, well-preserved hedgehog forms particularly sought after by collectors. This captivating example combines classic Ježkovna sculpturing, unusual wing-like symmetry, a natural central aperture and superb light transmission in one exceptionally characterful specimen.

What is Moldavite & where is it from?

Moldavite is a rare tektite or meteoric glass, caused by an asteroid impact 15 million years ago. The intense, 10,000°C+ temperatures of the strike vapourised the asteroid, target rock and sand, flinging the molten substance high into the atmosphere.

From the impact zone in Germany some 300km away, it landed back to earth in what is now the Czech Republic and as it flew, it cooled and solidified into translucent green, glass-like droplets of various shapes and sizes.

It is said that only 1% of what had originally fallen is still intact to this day and the estimates of the total amount of Moldavite remaining is under 300 tonnes. In comparison with gold or diamonds, this makes Moldavite 1000x rarer.

99% of all Moldavite is found in a small area in the southern part of the Czech Republic. It can be found on the surface but the highly prized, well-preserved specimens are found up to 6 metres underground.
