An impressive 6.87 gram Moldavite from the renowned Besednice Ježkovna locality, displaying the unmistakable natural sculpturing of a true “hedgehog.” Broad, substantial and beautifully three-dimensional, this specimen combines a dramatic fan-like body with a smaller projecting lobe, creating a highly distinctive and well-balanced silhouette.

Adding to its rarity, this is a genuine Angel Chime Moldavite. When gently tapped against another hard surface, it produces a clear, bell-like ringing tone created by natural internal stresses within the tektite. It is estimated that fewer than 1% of all Moldavites possess this remarkable acoustic property, placing Angel Chimes amongst the rarest and most desirable specimens available.

The principal face is covered with powerful radiating ridges that sweep outward from a deep central convergence. These grooves branch and overlap across the glass like the veins of a leaf, producing remarkable movement and depth. The pattern becomes increasingly pronounced toward the perimeter, where the ridges rise into a succession of rugged folds, scalloped crests and sharp natural projections.

A deep curved recess separates the main fan from the smaller outer lobe, giving the specimen an especially sculptural outline. This narrower section rises into several prominent peaks before spreading into its own cluster of flowing textures. The combination of a broad central body and dramatic side extension gives the piece an almost floral, flame-like or winged appearance.

The reverse is equally compelling, revealing a different arrangement of long sweeping channels, folded textures and naturally etched depressions. Small pits and bubble-like impressions add further detail, while the raised ridges catch the light beautifully from every viewing angle. Its depth and changing profile make this a specimen that rewards examination from all sides.

Held to strong light, the rich green glass displays excellent translucency. The thinner edges and elevated crests glow in lighter green tones, while the thicker central areas retain a deeper forest-green colour. This variation emphasises the stone’s complex relief and creates striking contrasts between illuminated peaks and shadowed valleys.

At 6.87 grams, this is a commanding and highly aesthetic Ježkovna Moldavite. Its impressive size, rich green colour, deeply radiating texture, unusual lobed silhouette and excellent intact condition make it a particularly desirable example of natural Moldavite sculpture.

What is Moldavite & where is it from?

Moldavite is a rare tektite or meteoric glass, caused by an asteroid impact 15 million years ago. The intense, 10,000°C+ temperatures of the strike vapourised the asteroid, target rock and sand, flinging the molten substance high into the atmosphere.

From the impact zone in Germany some 300km away, it landed back to earth in what is now the Czech Republic and as it flew, it cooled and solidified into translucent green, glass-like droplets of various shapes and sizes.

It is said that only 1% of what had originally fallen is still intact to this day and the estimates of the total amount of Moldavite remaining is under 300 tonnes. In comparison with gold or diamonds, this makes Moldavite 1000x rarer.

99% of all Moldavite is found in a small area in the southern part of the Czech Republic. It can be found on the surface but the highly prized, well-preserved specimens are found up to 6 metres underground.
